Plymouth is a haven for those interested in the milital history of England. It is renowned as an important naval base, having served as a shipbuilding and military base in World War II.

The naval use of this site extends far into Englands history. It was from Plymouth that Francis Drake sailed to defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588, and, 32 years later, was the last embarkation point for the Pilgrim Fathers, who later named the nucleus of North America New Plymouth Colony in its honour.

While visiting Plymouth, be sure to make a day trip into Mount Edgecumbe, where a relaxing antidote to the urban bustle awaits in the form of woods, meadows and some fabulous sand. Also be sure to travel east, where the aristocratic Sultram House boasts of fine art and furniture; and, to the north of Plymouth is Buckland Abbey, the renowned residence of Francis Drake.
