Salzburg
Salzburg is thought by many to be the cultural epicenter of Austria.
Because it existed as an independent city-state until 1816, Salzburg
developed a decidedly Italianate culture, with stunning churches and
architecture reminiscent of it’s period. However, it is still a part of
Austria, which is easily seen in its beautiful sub-alpine scenery. This
combination, truly the best of both worlds, is what attracts many
visitors to the area.
Salzburg also claims a strong musical heritage, as it is the birthplace
of Mozart. The famous composer is widely celebrated throughout the city,
and even has his own chocolate delicacy, the Mozartkügel, completely
unique to the area! If music is of an interest, the Salzburg Festival is
definitely of consideration. The five-week celebration of opera,
orchestral music and theatre is a yearly event in Salzburg, beginning in
late July.
Fans of “The Sound of Music” will be overjoyed by the scenery so
reminiscent of the film. Many guided tours and shows are offered daily
on this theme, as well as countless souvenirs.
The city of Salzburg is alive 12 months of the year, with unique
celebrations for each season. One of the local favourites is the
Christkindlmarkt, or Christmas Market, which offers handmade crafts of
every distinction.
